Overwhelmed | The Story Behind The Song

I vividly remember the day Tim wrote Overwhelmed. Well, the night really.

Like many times before, it was late at night (about 1 am) and then all of a sudden Tim’s creative juices began to flow. He picked up his guitar, and locked himself in our then small apartment studio.

I had been at auditions all day and was exhausted, so I flopped over onto the bed and listened to the distant soft strum of his fingers on the strings as I drifted off to sleep.

Then, after drifting off for an unknown period of time, I was gently woken by a small whisper in my ear, while being tugged close into my husbands arms: “I wrote you a song”.

Not My First Love Song

Tim had written me songs before Overwhelmed, however none that he really loved. I always loved them though.

There was one he wrote and recorded for me when we were dating called “Come Away With Me”.  It had my name in it (“Oh Khaili, won’t you stay with me in this moment forever girl?” <3 ) and I listened to it over and over and over for years. It was the soundtrack to my life for some time. I always wanted Tim to release it, and for it to become a huge hit so I could say “That song is about me!” He was never really happy with it however, so it has always just stayed my own private song.

That morning however, when I sat up and listened as Tim played and sung Overwhelmed to me for the first time, and his lyrics filled my heart with love and joy, I knew this was the song that I would be able to say “it’s about me!” I knew it would be big. More importantly though, I knew it was real. It was us!

I couldn’t stop smiling the whole time. I remember asking him to play it again right away when he finished. Then asking to read the lyrics. Then play it again.

The day he began recording, I just sat outside the studio door and listened.

The Music Video Is Born

When the song began to attract some attention, we thought about filming a music video. Tim decided he wanted the video to be me through his eyes. That’s what the song was, and he wanted the video to portray that in a simple and raw form. He was adamant that we refused to give into the demands of pop culture by creating some phony sexed up fantasy version of our love story, and I couldn’t have agreed more.

To Tim (and me), the meaning behind the message in music is everything. A lot of music today is wrapped in a shiny package, but at it’s core, is destructive to undiscerning ears. Both of us believe that love and monogamous relationships have been given a bad rap and we wanted to give the world a real glimpse into what our lives together are like – because we truly believe that love never fails.

Filming the video was really just us being us. It was our life together. Going on dates, laughing, joking, and loving each other.

Sometimes I really wish I had written Overwhelmed for Tim! Not because I want to have written one of the most amazing songs in the world (because, lets face it – it really is!) but just because it is how I truly also feel about him. I always say I wish there was another word to describe how much I love him. As great as the word is, “love” just sometimes seems inadequate.

Love Gets Another Chance

Through Overwhelmed, Tim has managed to capture and put into words the moments, feelings, and life that we share – and through the video, empower and re-ignite relationships around the world. It has been amazing the number of people around the world who have wrote sharing their story of how Overwhelmed has touched and changed their own relationships and lives.

We’ve heard stories of deeply wounded relationships being healed, broken homes restored, couples committing and re-committing to making their relationships the best they can be and so much more. We’ve been sent video after video after video of proposals and beautiful marriages happening all around the world to the tune of Overwhelmed. After all this however, I can’t tell you how it feels to know that the song was first mine 🙂 , and will always be mine. Of course I’m happy to share it however!

Overwhelmed has had some great success (and thank you to everyone who has watched the video, and purchased the song so far!) I believe however, that it is going to see much more exposure than it has to date. It’s a timeless song, and as the video sits just under its three millionth view, I just thought I’d also share it with you below here too. 🙂

If Overwhelmed has been a part of your life in any way big or small, I’d love to hear your story in the comments!

    Hi Khaili!

It’s so nice to read the story behind Overwhelmed.

The first time I ever heard it, I too had to hear it again. I found the music video on YouTube and watched it over and over again. I couldn’t find a place to download it so I would hook my phone up in my car, open YouTube and listen to it that way. Now it’s on Soundcloud and I still listen to it all of the time. My kiddos love it too. It’s truly one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. Thank you for sharing your story with us. ??

    Khaili,

This story is amazing to hear you tell from your perspective.

The song overwhelmed came into my life several years ago after returning from a business trip. My then boyfriend (and now fiancé!) surprised me with a picture slideshow of our first two years of dating set to the music of overwhelmed after a very delayed flight and 5 days away from him. I sat on our couch watching the video and crying out of sheer happiness and love. I’ve never been touched by a more censere and loving gesture and the lyrics explained out life together perfectly. It was at that very moment that I realized this was the man I would spend the rest of my life with.

We are now both teachers (he does kindergarten and I’m 8th grade math) we just bought our home and we are in the final stages of planning our wedding! We are trying to pick our wedding song and Overwhelemed is the only one that comes to mind because it holds such a significant place in our memories and in our hearts… If only there was a slower version it would be perfect to dance to and listen to in front of our family and friends (if there is I would love to hear it)!!!

I love your song so very much and thank you for sharing it. It will always be very special to both of us 🙂

Hi Jen! Thanks for reading – and so great to hear your story and how Overwhelmed has been apart of your life and relationship. Thank you for sharing! What a sweet thing for your fiancée to do with the slide show! 🙂

Such an exciting time you are in right now! Congratulations on your new home! I hope the wedding planning is all going smoothly and you are enjoying it all!

Unfortunately at the moment Tim doesn’t have a slower version of Overwhelmed – however it has been something that has been requested a lot, so it’s definitely something that he is planning on doing in the future – but possibly not in time for your wedding. I hope you can still find a way to have the song part of your special day in some way though 🙂

Wishing you and your husband-to-be so much love and happiness together!! <3

        Hey Khaili,

I love the song and the back story. My fiancé and I love the song and plan on using it our wedding in some fashion. I also would love to have a slow option. Has Tim had a chance to let his creative juices flow on the slower version yet?

well now.. I may not really care about the internet, nor use the computer all that much (way too busy! and still not that tech savvy lol), but just a heads up Khai… you and Tim are always in my mind and heart. Miss you two greatly and will one day surprise you guys 🙂

    Cheers!

    Khaili,

This song has been a special part of my fiance and my life for awhile now. I proposed over a year ago and I played this song for her that day. And ever since then we have listen to the song over and over on YouTube.

We really wanted to have this song be a part of our big day in a couple of weeks. Our plan was to have a same-day edit our wedding day and while it was played at the wedding have “Overwhelmed” be played with the video. Unfortunately the photographer just notified us we cannot use unauthorized music in the video. Is there anyway you or Tim know how we can obtain rights to use this song.

Thanks for taking the time to read this comment, and your story and the song is very inspirational.

    Rob

      Hi Rob!
Thank you for reading and for your comment..So happy to hear that Overwhelmed has been part of your love story too! 🙂

Unfortunately at this time Overwhelmed isn’t available for license – but it will be soon! We are in the process of launching our own Royalty Free market place on Kingscrownproductions.com and Overwhelmed will be one of the first songs exclusively available through there. But until then (Which will be sometime later this year) it is not available. Sorry about that!

Thanks again for reading. Congratulations to you and your new wife!! 🙂

Khaili, first off, i LOVE your name, it looks and sounds beautiful- unique spelling. When my now husband-then fiance were looking for a first dance song, we wanted something special, something unique, and something that spoke to us. I spent endless hours searching the depths of the internet looking for something that I could say “that’s us”, just as you were able to the first time he played the song for you (although he did write it for you! 🙂 ) Nervously I brought this song up for my husband and asked him to listen, nervous he would shut it down as he is very particular, but he loved it. He plays it all the time to this date. This song is perfect for us. I love that Tim wrote this for you so my husband and I can share in the love and connect and rekindle our love each time it is played.

So for that, I thank you.

I first heard the chorus of this song on a Samuel Adams commercial and I LOVED it instantly. Then I googled the lyrics. Then I found the YouTube official video. Then I cried and smiled and loved it even more and realized that it is one of the greatest love songs ever! It’s so simple yet so genuine. It reminds me of my relationship with my husband. I love the video and the perspective it is shown from. It’s just so real and so refreshing to see real love. I think my favorite part might the end. Love never fails. Never give up. So true and so great! 1 Cor. 13:4-7

I love the ending too! 🙂

    Hi Khaili!

I first heard this song on a Sam Adams commercial. It stuck in my head and I immediately looked it up online. When I watched your video and listened to the words, I got goosebumps. I almost cried right then and there. I had this flood of emotions just thinking about my fiancé and I and how this song so perfectly conveyed everything that I felt and couldn’t put into words. We were high school sweethearts that went our separate ways for a few years and then reconnected about 9 years ago. During the last 9 years life threw some real curve balls at us – my fiancé is now almost blind for reasons that doctors can’t determine- but we’ve had some amazing times too. I just can’t explain how much this song means to me because through all the ups and downs that we’ve been faced with, we never gave up on our love for each other. We are finally getting married in September and I just wanted you to know that this song will be part of our special day 🙂

Thank you for sharing your beautiful story – the love and happiness that you guys have for each other definitely shines through this song.

We are getting married in western NY on September 26 – I thought I read somewhere that you guys are located in Toronto. It’s not too far away from where we grew up. If you want to see in person how your song has touched another couple, you are welcome to attend 🙂

Thank you so much Donna for sharing your story and connection with Overwhelmed.

It sounds like you and your fiancé have an amazing relationship, and love for each other. I am so happy to hear that you are getting married (And that Overwhelmed will be apart of the day!!) And thank you so much for the offer to attend. That is so sweet of you! I don’t think it would be possible for us to make it (Life with a 7 month old baby who never leaves my arms 😉 haha) but really so appreciate the offer.

Wishing you so much love and happiness on your special day on September 26th, and for the rest of your lives together. Keep that determination to get through anything that life throws your way together, and your love will never fail 🙂

Beautiful in all ways. I heard this song for the first time yesterday…and already played it for my husband:) I am truly lucky and blessed to have found the love of my life (he’s just plain awesome, 7 years and 2 kids in), and this song put into words so much of what we feel for each other.

Even more lovely is that the song is sincere and about two real people. I am happy for the both of you:)

So great to hear Abby! Glad you found the song, and my story here 🙂

Much like Donna I first heard the song in a Sam Adams commercial. As soon as I heard it I knew I wanted that song to be the first dance with my (now) wife. Even with the crafty wording in the proposal of using the song she picked up it was from the commercial and I got a resounding no. I refused to take that as the answer. I made her listen to it and got an immediate change in response. She teared up a bit and agreed. We took dance lessons leading up to the wedding and nailed it. We have it on video if you’re interested to see how other people show respect to your song =)

      Hey Kevin!
Thank you for reading, and for sharing your story and connection with the song. So glad your wife ended up agreeing! 🙂
Congratulations on your marriage too! Wishing you both a lifetime of being overwhelmed by each other 🙂

Hi Khaili! Thanks for posting this! My soon to be husband and I really love the song and your story. I know about a year ago you mentioned that a slower version might be in the works- any word on that? We’re using Overwhelmed as our first dance song and we’re hoping a slightly slowed down version might be available. Please let me know, thank you!

    Hello!!

The other night when I was laying bed, my boyfriend opened up the YouTube app and typed in this song. He put the phone face down on the bed and we just listened to this song. It genuinely brought tears to my eyes. You see, we have “known” each other for quite some time, but we have only been dating for about 2 months, and the day I went out with him for the first time, my whole heart opened up. we are completely overwhelmed by each other.

Thank you to your husband for creating a song that so accurately describes what meeting your soul mate feels like.

    Hello Khaili

I feel a little odd writing to you and your husband. But this song really gave me a wonderful internal experience. I have a career in law enforcement and I am a military officer in the reserves. I have to keep a tough exterior in my day to day life. This song broke me and brought tears to me eyes.

When I was in college, I was a huge romantic. I was deeply in love with the woman I knew for sure I was going to marry. Just like Tim, I would sit and write my feelings for her. Women can never imagine how much your smiles can truly change a man’s life. I had to express how I felt about her and wanted her to see herself through my eyes. I am no where near as close to being as talented as Tim, but I was pretty good at writing poetry. Unfortunately that girl I knew I was going to marry cheated on me. Broke my heart.

That hardened my heart and made me a little cold. I never wanted to feel that pain again. Since then, I stopped writing poetry and I only pursued meaningless relationships that only fulfilled immediate gratification. I never let myself get close to anyone and I never said the words I love you.

When I first heard the song, it was actually on a commercial 🙂 I don’t remember which one. I looked it up and listened to it. When I first saw the video, I was touched. It reminded of exactly how I used to feel. To be so in love with a woman, that all you want to do is think of ways to make her happy. You two inspired me to start writing poetry again. I want to have that feeling I once had. Thank you both for sharing your lives and for your inspiration. I wish you all the luck and success in the world.
